Product Information

Ranger® R8SS

The FLIR Ranger® R8SS is a lightweight, man-portable ground surveillance radar optimized for mid-range detection of personnel and vehicles. With a 15 km instrumented range and detection capabilities up to 18 km for large vehicles, the R8SS delivers powerful threat awareness from a compact 10.5 kg platform.

Scanning at up to 4 Hz, the R8SS electronically surveys a ±45° sector per panel and achieves full 360° coverage when mounted on a pan/tilt unit. Its fast refresh rate ensures quick acquisition and tracking of up to 512 moving targets with high accuracy—even those crawling or moving slowly, thanks to a minimum detection velocity of <0.1 m/s.

Engineered for flexibility in mobile and fixed installations, the radar requires just one cable and four bolts to deploy. Built-in GPS and compass automate alignment, while XML support and Ethernet connectivity ensure seamless integration with command systems and EO/IR platforms.

Ideal for border surveillance, base protection, and rapid-deployment scenarios, the R8SS operates reliably in all conditions and includes an energy-saving RF output mode for extended battery-powered missions.

Ranger R6SS & R8SS

Mid-Range Radar for Portable Force Protection

The Ranger R8SS tracks vehicles and personnel at up to 18 km, using a form factor light enough to carry in a backpack. Its high detection performance and rugged design make it ideal for border patrol and dismounted operations.

Fast-Scan Coverage and High Target Capacity

Capable of 2 Hz or 4 Hz scan rates, the radar refreshes its detection zone up to four times per second—capturing even fast, small, or slow-moving threats. With capacity for 512 simultaneous tracks, it offers a full picture of the surrounding threat environment.

Flexible Deployment and Energy Efficiency

Designed for man-portable or vehicle-mounted use, the R8SS consumes only 135 W, or as little as 65 W using its controllable RF output. It’s an excellent fit for battery-constrained missions and remote field operations.

Military-Tested for Harsh Environments

With IP67 sealing and MIL-STD-810G certification, the R8SS is built to withstand dust, rain, vibration, and temperature extremes. Built-in GPS, compass, and easy XML integration ensure it’s ready for modern defense ecosystems.
